STOP PRESS The Dolphin has now reopened!
Since taking over The Dolphin in 2003 Chris and Sandy have made a wide-ranging positive contribution to the local community in this area of Southampton and have recently risked all to continue with this enterprise.
Their fearless stand against antisocial behaviour and crime has recently been properly recognised as part of Tony Blair's 'Respect' agenda.
The Dolphin is a member of an endangered species. Chris and Sandy make a point of getting to know their customers personally and have become friends with many of us over the years. It is a pub where you are always assured of a welcome and an environment where harassment or 'trouble' of any kind are virtually unknown.
The decor is traditional and basic and the beer is renowned for its excellence; it is featured in the Camra guide. The traditional Sunday lunches and specialities such as lamb shanks issued from the kitchen run by Sandy have been enjoyed by many locals when taking a day off from cooking.
Perhaps the feature which most distinguishes The Dolphin is its role as a stage for local musical talent: bands such as Arnie Cottrell & Tim Payne, Contraband, Colm Murphy & Don Oeters and Louche Manouche give the locals a holiday from the tedium and enslavement of modern life: brainwashing by television, manufactured music and the richly carpeted impersonal chain pub with its bouncers, television screens.
